Leader’s Note: This is a nice ease back into hillwalking and a fabulous easy hillwalk particularly for our new members. We will start at the public car park (free parking, link to google maps above) the west pier walking towards the east pier (where there are toilet facilities available). We have an initial climb to start the walk, following the purple arrows taking the path along the cliffs to beyond Red Rock. Passing the Baily Lighthouse and then follow the path to the Martello tower. We’ll cross over the busy Carrickbrack Road and then we’re in the hillside section. The track takes us around the shoulder of Sheilmartin Hill and we enter the golf course crossing through. This takes us into the Bog of Frog area where we follow the track through to the wooded area. We then have a slight ascent up to the stunning viewing point above Deer Park, then through Howth Castle and back to the West Pier. You will be rewarded with stunning views all around the route namely the Great Sugar Loaf, Wicklow Mountains, Aviva Stadium, Dublin Airport and much more.
Walking poles will be useful on some sections and also trekking shoes (not runners).
Public Transport: The train leaves Skerries at 8:20am, change at Howth Junction, arrive Howth 09:04am.
WhatsApp : For ease of communication a WhatsApp group will be set up for the group coming on this walk. If you do not wish to be included please let the leader know when registering your interest in the walk.
