Please text the leader by Friday 30th August if you intend going on the walk and state whether meeting up at Skerries Point or Ott car park. For ease of communication and updates a WhatsApp group will be set up for those coming on this walk. If you do not wish to be included in the WhatsApp group, then please let the leader know when registering for the walk.

Leader’s Note:

The route will be as follows: Ott car park (385m) – Ott Mountain (524m) – Carn Mountain (588m) – Slieve Muck (674m) – Lough Shannagh (408m) – Doan (594m) – car park. From the summits we can enjoy fine views of the western Mournes. Much of the route consists of rough tracks and uneven open terrain. Walking poles, if you use them, would be useful. There is steep rough ground when we ascend from Lough Shannagh to Doan and a short scramble section near the summit of Doan. Modifications to the route can be made, depending on the group and weather conditions on the day. Ott Mountain car park is a popular starting point for walks, but it has limited space, so car pooling is advised.

Directions from Skerries:

Take the M1 to Newry. From Newry take the B8 to Hilltown. Just outside Hilltown take the B27 (Kilkeel Road) to Spelga Dam. There are toilets available at Spelga Dam carpark. 1 km after Spelga carpark, turn left at the junction with Slievenaman Road and continue for just over 1 km. Ott carpark (Grid ref: J 280 279) is on the left-hand side. Alternatively, open this Google link: https://maps.app.goo.gl/Vuca8MfM3yyL4NQ88 and select ‘Directions’.
