Hill Walk Slieve Gullion

Meeting Point: Car Park at Slieve Gullion Forest Park J 040 197. Travel time from Skerries allow 1 hour.   

Meeting Time: 10am 

Walk Start Time: 10.15am

Route: This walk is  a loop walk that starts at Sievel Gullion Forest car park and takes path, road and track to gradually climb to Sl Gullion and then follows  a track to the North Cairn and from there downhill to Ballagh road and back along quiet country roads to the car park. 

Distance: 14 km

Height : Total ascent 440 m  (highest point Sl Gullion 574m)

Duration:   4.5 to 5 hours including breaks

Leader’s Note: This is a moderate walk but on the easy side of moderate. It follows road, paths and tracks. It starts at the Slieve Gullion Forest Park and follows path and quiet road uphill for 4 km before joining the well established track to Slieve Gullion South Trig. From here, there are great views to be had of the Ring of Gullion, the Armagh drumlins, the Mourne mountains and the Cooleys. From here we will walk along the ridge to the Calliagh Berra’s lough and the North Cairn. From there we will go downhill along a track that may be wet /muddy in places to reach Ballard Road and from there we will walk the quiet roads back to the car park. 

Directions from Skerries: Travel time from Skerries approx. 1 hour taking the M1 north and the B113 exit (Junction 20 on the A1) towards Forkhill/ Newry South. There is  a large car park and toilet facilities are available there.  

Covid-19 related: Walkers are advised that they will be asked to confirm that they have no Covid-19 like symptoms and agree to walk at their own risk.  The organisers cannot accept any liability in the event of injury/Covid-19 infection

General:

Leave No Trace: the club is a supporter of the Leave No Trace campaign so please ensure that you leave no litter (of any sort) on the hike route

Clothing/Equipment: please ensure that, at the very least, you have either hiking boots or walking shoes (no trainers) and depending on weather forecast, multiple layers including a warm jacket/ fleece, hat and gloves, a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, a flask with a hot drink, food, snacks and water. 

 If unsure about the required gear or your ability to undertake the walk please check with the walk leader in advance.
