Hill Walk Spelga Skyline

Walk : Spelga Skyline – Mourne Hillwalk, Grade higher end of Moderate

Meeting Time: 10 am

Walk Start Time: 10.15 am

Route: Starting at Spelga Dam Car Park, we climb Slievenamiskan from just below the dam, then we head SW to Cock Mt and then drop down SE over heathery, boggy ground to find a track leading to the climb up Pigeon where we meet the Mourne wall. We follow the wall SE down to the B22 road. Then it’s a steep 314m climb up to the summit of Sl Muck and N on to Carn Mt. Then we start our descent via a coll to the Slievenaman Rd and back along the B27 for just over 1km to the car park.

Height : Total accent 805m 

Duration:   5.5 to 6 hours approx.

Leader’s Note: This walk is at the higher end of moderate with a total accent of 805m. The walk starts at Spelga Dam car park and climbs five peaks overlooking Spelga Dam Resevoir – Slievenamiskan 444m, Cock Mt 505m, Pigeon Mt 534m, Slieve Muck 674m and Carn Mt 588m. The climb to Sl Muck is a steep 314m. On a clear day there are wonderful views. There is some rough, boggy gound so full gear including sticks, if you use them, is recommended. 

Directions from Skerries: Follow M1 to Newry exit/A28/ Downpatrick/ A25 from A1. Take B8 Hilltown Rd to Kilkeel Rd B27 or follow the Google Link https://goo.gl/maps/AyUVir2Lgwi74Ssq7  Allow 1.5 hours from Skerries

Leave No Trace: the club is a supporter of the Leave No Trace campaign so please ensure that you leave no litter (of any sort) on the hike route

Clothing/Equipment: please ensure that, at the very least, you have either hiking boots or walking shoes (no trainers) and depending on weather forecast, multiple layers including a warm jacket/ fleece, hat and gloves, a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, a flask with a hot drink, food, snacks and water.
