Hill Walk Tonelagee/ Brocagh

June 22

This walk forms part of the Club weekend away in Co. Wicklow and is open to all Club members even if you are not participating in the overnight stay in Co. Wicklow.

 

Walk: Hillwalk (moderate)

Meeting Point: Laragh , car park at St Kevins Church. Eircode A98 D326

Meeting Time: 10am

Walk Start Time: 10.30 am from Wicklow Gap (includes time to get to Wicklow gap by car)

Route: This is a lovely walk along mountain tracks which on a clear day offers great views of
Glendalough and the Wicklow mountains. We start at the Wicklow Gap and climb approx
340 m to the summit of Tonelagee. From there we descend in a south easterly direction and
take a track along the Brocagh ridge going up and down a number of spot heights until we
reach Brocagh (557m) and then Brocagh East (470m). From there we descend and walk back
to the car park at St Kevins Church.

Distance: approx. 11 KM

Height: Highest point 817 m (Tonelagee) ; Total ascent approx 730 m

Duration: 4.5 to 5 hours including breaks

Leader’s Note: As this walk is a Linear walk starting at the Wicklow Gap and finishing in
Laragh we will meet in Laragh (St Kevins Church) and car pool to the Wicklow Gap. On
return to Laragh drivers will be brought back to Wicklow Gap to collect cars (a distance of
approx 8km).

This is a moderate walk and is along mountain tracks. There is no scrambling involved. If
there has been rain the ground may be boggy so poles and gaiters are advised.

Directions from Skerries: Journey time from Skerries to Laragh approx 1.5 hours. Take the
M50 and continue on the M11 and at Kilmacanogue exit onto the R755 and continue on the
R755 to Roundwood and onto Annamoe and to Laragh. Drive through Laragh and past the
Wicklow Heather take a right and go past the Brockagh Resource Centre and at the end of
the road St Kevins church is on yourleft. Eircode: A98D326

General:
Leave No Trace: the club is a supporter of the Leave No Trace campaign so please ensure that
you leave no litter (of any sort) on the hike route
Clothing/Equipment: please ensure that, at the very least, you have either hiking boots or
walking shoes (no trainers) and depending on weather forecast, multiple layers including a
warm jacket/ fleece, hat and gloves, a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, a flask with a
hot drink, food, snacks and water.
