This is an EASY RAMBLE

1) Please ensure that, at the very least, you have good walking shoes (no trainers), and depending on the weather forecast – multiple layers including a warm jacket/fleece, hat and gloves, a waterproof jacket and trousers, snacks, a litre of water and a small rucksack. If you are unsure about your gear check with the leader a few days beforehand as anyone turning up with inadequate gear will not be permitted to walk.

2) It is highly recommended that you do not wear any clothing made from DENIM/CORDUROY/COTTON on the walk.

3) The club is a supporter of the ‘Leave No Trace’ campaign so please ensure that you leave no litter (of any sort) on the walk route.

4) NEVER go ahead of the Leader without being sure of the way!

Leader’s Note:

The Royal Canal Way is a most interesting and pleasant walk. Continuing on from where we walked to previously, we will do the stretch from Leixlip (Confey) to Kilcock – 16 km. Forecast is good for Wed. – a cool day with sunny spells. En route we will be taking in the Rye Valley Aquaduct, Maynooth town with St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth University and the imposing FitzGerald Castle and Jackson’s Bridge at the 14th Lock – unique with its five arches spanning canal, rail, river, cattle path – and as if specially designed with walkers in mind – a pedestrian underpass.

However there is an ‘opt out’ at Maynooth – 10 km for those who might want to only walk that far, either returning by train from there (13.40  arr. Connolly 14.22 Pl. 4  14.50 Pl. 4 arr. Skerries 15.20; 14.10  arr. Connolly 14.52 Pl. 2  15.22 Pl. 4 arr. Skerries 15.59) or onwards to Kilcock (13.36) to join in the post walk refreshments and food in Thomas O’Keefe’s, alongside the canal for those who want to relax after the walk before catching the train back to Skerries.

We will meet at Skerries Train Station at 08.40 a.m. to catch the 08.52 a.m. train to Connolly arriving at 09.29 Pl. 6, then the 09.50 Pl. 7 Maynooth train arr. Leixlip (Confey) 10.18 a.m.  A short walk to the River Forest Hotel for coffee & scones before starting the walk.

NB No sandwich required as there is no lunch pit stop on mid-week walks.

Leap Card or else single fare to Leixlip – €6.20. Leap Card or else single fare from Kilcock to Skerries – €6.20.  Tickets can be purchased from platform machines.

Return trains:  15.28 Kilcock  arr. Connolly 16.08 Pl. 4  16.28 Pl. 7 arr. Skerries 17.0017.37 Kilcock   arr. Connolly 18.20 Pl. 4   18.30 Pl. 7 arr. Skerries 19.00.

Bus Éireann option (single fare – €5.50) + train:  16.05 Kilcock  arr. Bachelors Walk 16.54

17.14 Tara St.  arr. Skerries 17.57

Please email or text leader John Coleman by Tues. 11th Feb. if you intend going on the walk and indicating whether meeting up in Skerries, Connolly or Leixlip.
