Hill Walk West Cooleys Poc Fada Walk

Start Time:  9:45am – Please allow sufficient time to deal with boots etc.

Walk Start Time: 10:00am

Distance / Duration: Approx. 5.5 hours

Meeting Point:  Lumpers Pub Car Park, Ballymakellet, Revensdale, Dundalk, Co Louth.

Route Details: A ten-minute road walk from Lumpers to a forest barrier, follow Foyle’s way through the forest along a stream crossing many small footbridges to Slievestucan, along open mountain to Carnavaddy, then follow the yellow Poc Fada stones to Black Mt and Clermont Cairn. Descend to An Fhána Mór and return over lower hills to the start.

Leader’s Note: A lovely, looped walk through picturesque and varied scenery. We gain height gradually to reach Slievestucan 325m, then Carnavaddy 475m and follow the Poc Fada stones to Black Mt 464m and Clermont Cairn 508m. We return via An Fhána Mór and follow the Poc Fada stones across a ravine and follow one of the many tracks back to Foyle’s way to descend to the start. Some boggy wet ground and streams to cross. Full walking gear, including poles if you use them, necessary.

Directions from Skerries: Heading North take exit 18 off the M1 and 2nd Left on to R173 towards Carlingford. After 2.5 km turn left at the Flurry River L3085 signposted Ravensdale. Continue to a T junction and take a right onto R174. Continue for 1km to Lumper’s Pub on your left. Bar and toilet facilities will be open after the walk.
