Hill Walk Mourne Mountains Sl. Bearnagh

Route Details: Trassey Track, Green Road to Sleivenaglough, Hare’s Gap, Slieve Bearnagh, return route via Trassey Track

Further Information:  THIS IS A HILLWALK – NOT A RAMBLE

Leader’s Note:  A good level of fitness is required for this HILLWALK as it is somewhat strenuous in parts and hiking poles are recommended if you generally use them.  We start at Meelmore Lodge and follow the Trassey Track till we turn on to a green path which takes us up to meet the Mourne Wall.  We follow this to Slienenaglough to get the best views of the Ben Crom Reservoir flanked by the peaks of Cove Mountain, Slievelamagan and Slieve Binnian on one side and our destination of Slieve Bearnagh on the other.  We approach Slieve Bearnagh by the North Tor, where the otherworldly looking Summit Tor lies in front of us.

After lunch and depending on conditions, fitness and enthusiasm we can either descend to the gap between Slieve Bearnagh and Slieve Meelmore and then back down via the Trassey Track or from the gap proceed up to Slieve Meelmore summit and then descend to pick up a track which will bring us back to Meelmore Lodge via the Ulster Way.

As we get deeper into autumn it could be very cold, especially on the exposed parts so please ensure you have extra layers and a warm drink, as well as all usual wet gear requirements.
