Hill Walk SW Mournes (Cancelled!)

Walk :  Hillwalk in the Mournes

Meeting Point: Kilbroney Forest Park, Rostrevor,  grid ref: J186 https://goo.gl/maps/uFatBpMx6TrQAs6a6

Meeting Time: 10am

Walk Start Time: 10:15am

Route: Starting in Kilbroney Park  the walk takes us through Rostrevor forest for the first hour and a half, gaining height gently until we reach open mountain and make our way south uphill towards Knockshee 347m, with views East to the high Mournes and west over Carlingford Lough to the Cooleys. Then we turn NW towards Sl Fada 420m and Sl Martin 485m and back to the car park along the Glen Stream. 

Distance: 12km

Height : Total ascent  550m

Duration:  5-5.5 hours

Please Text the leader by FRIDAY 21ST 7PM if you intend going on the walk and indicate if you can give a lift or need a lift. 

Leader’s Note: The route uses forest tracks, open mountain and riverside paths. Full gear needed including gaiters and poles if you use them. The ascent to Knockshee is over rough marshy ground with some stream crossings along the way. The route offers stunning views of Carlingford Lough in a remote corner of the Mournes. 

Directions from Skerries: Via M1 to the Newry exit off A1. Follow the Mourne Coastal Route through Newry, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor on the A2 to a left turn about 1.5km beyond Rostrevor to Kilbroney Forest Park. Meet in the main car park at 10am, ready to walk 10.15. There are toilets and a café in the park which will be open before and after the walk. General:

Leave No Trace: the club is a supporter of the Leave No Trace campaign so please ensure that you leave no litter (of any sort) on the hike route

Clothing/Equipment: please ensure that, at the very least, you have either hiking boots or walking shoes (no trainers) and depending on weather forecast, multiple layers including a warm jacket/ fleece, hat and gloves, a waterproof jacket, waterproof trousers, a flask with a hot drink, food, snacks and water. 

 If unsure about the required gear or your ability to undertake the walk please check with the walk leader in advance.
