Leader’s Note: This is the most popular walk in Glendalough. The Spinc is the name of the hill and it comes from Irish, An Spinc, which means pointed hill. We’ll start this scenic hike from the upper car park (€4 charge for the car park for the day) passing the Poulanass waterfall. A new forest path zig zags over what used to be 600 steps to the top, now an easier ascent to the first viewing platform with great views of the two lakes. We’ll follow the wooden boardwalk along the top of the cliffs that line the southern shore of the Upper Lake, then we’ll descend into the Glenealo Valley. We’ll cross over the river and make our way down the zig-zag path that can be a bit tricky in places underfoot, arriving at the miner’s village and then following the flat path along the northern shore of the Upper Lake, back to the car park. It’s not uncommon to see deer and wild goats and even peregrine falcons, so we may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse.
Note: Please wear trekking shoes and if you use sticks, bring them, you’ll find them very useful particularly on the way down. There are toilet facilities at the car park and also food trucks for food and coffee after.
Directions from Skerries: Travel time to the Glendalough Upper Car Park is approx.. 1 hour 30 minutes. Take the M50 to the M11 and exit M11 at Kilmacanogue and take the R755 to Roundwood onto to Glendalough.
